THAILAND GOLF COURSES

Chiang Rai & Mai
Chiang Mai is referred to by the locals as the ‘Rose of the North’ due to the areas incredible flora and fauna, mountainous landscapes and tropical jungle. This area of Thailand offers a wonderful golfing holiday experience as there are so many courses to choose. Not only this the area has many other attractions and activities such as mountain biking, hiking, Elephant parks and adrenaline zip wire rides. Chaing Rai on the other hand has only 3 golf course and is a lot quieter, the ideal setting for relaxation. Golf tours to the area can be extremely varied depending on the golf experience that you are after. We can even combine both locations where you can travel between Chiang Rai and Mai on your very own private river boat.
Chiang Mai and Chiang rai Golf Trip

Alpine Golf Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,541, Par:72
Formerly known as the Chiang Mai Lamphun Golf Club this course you won’t be surprised to hear due to its new name is set amongst a range of mountains. The course architect is no other than Ron Garl and he has designed a course that seamlessly flows through its beautiful and natural surroundings. The course also boosts some interesting signature holes such as having the longest par 5 in Thailand.

Mae Jo Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,657, Par:72
Located only a short distance from Chang Mai, near the Mae Jo Agricultural college this course is fun and definitely worthwhile playing. Designed for golfers of all abilities but perfect for low handicappers as the course is very fair and forgiving in most places. This popular course is set amongst fruit orchards, trees, well placed water hazards and surrounding mountains and offers a great view of Doi Suthep.

Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort

Holes: 27, Yardage: 7,003 / 3,601, Par:72 /36
This golf course is simply breath-taking to look at from almost anywhere on the course. Just to start with the drive to the course is picturesque enough but the landscaping around mountains, rice paddies and plantations is wonderfully put together. The designer behind the course is Lee Schmidt who also designed other top courses such as Mission Hills, Amata Springs and Siam Country Club. The course was also voted as being the best new course in Asia in 2007, the best value course in Asia in 2103.

Royal Chiang Mai Golf Club & Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,969, Par:72
Build on the site of a former fruit orchard in 1996 this Peter Thomson designed course has matured incredibly. The course is laden with beautiful native trees that simply come to life with different fragrant smells and colours depending on the season you play. All in all the course is a wonderful balance of elevated greens, well positioned bunkers as well as streams and even a waterfall coming in to play.

Chaing Mai Inthanon Golf & Natural Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,268, Par:72
Even though this course was built as recently as 2009 it is maturing well and has blended in to its natural setting extremely well in such a short time. The course as you would expect is surrounded by rolling hills and also some fruit orchards. The course changes as you play starting relatively open and forgiving but later on wayward shots will be punished. The finishing 2 holes are also considered of two of the most attractive holes in the area.

Summit Green Valley Chiang Mai Country Club (Chiang Mai)

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,202, Par:72
This Dennis Griffin designed course is immaculately kept and is a great addition to any Thai golf holiday. This course is different to most in the area due to its close location to town making it a lowlands course. However, it is still surrounded by lovely views and the mountains in the distance. The course its self is a nice balance of risk and reward with water coming in to play on many holes.

Gassan Khunta Golf & Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,068, Par:72
A true thinkers course where silly decisions will be punished. As on many holes you have the opportunity to be brave and take on challenges that lie in front. From how much to cut off the corners at the sharp doglegs to taking on the numerous water hazards that sometimes may coax you in to trying to carry them. However, your round goes you will still be able to take in the surrounding natural beauty from club house’s terrace.

Santiburi Chiang Rai Country Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,853, Par:72
This course is a firm favourite amongst expats and locals alike and if you are lucky enough to play this Trent Jones Jr designed course you will see why. The course is immaculately maintained and is a joy to play and enjoyable for golfers of all abilities. This is a thinkers course with the placement of your shots being extremely important if you are to walk away with a competitive score.

Happy City Golf Resort

Holes: 29, Yardage: 7,036, Par:72 / 36
This unusual Korean designed course is the only 29 hole golf course in the world. The course consists of 3, 9 hole courses, namely the River, Lakeside and Mountain Breese. The two extra hols have been designed for maintenance reasons and can be switched in and out as not to disrupt play if there are any improvements happing on the course which is very ingenious and totally different. The course its self plays well and is a good inclusion to any golfing holiday.

Waterford Valley Golf Club & Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,961, Par:72
This is a fairly hilly course which is quite unusual in Asia and it is built on top of a plateau surrounded by mountains and lush valleys. Designed in 1994 by Rather International the incredible views that you get from the course are reason enough to play. However, the course does have some extremely interesting holes on this predominantly parkland course.

At Play Golf Asia we have only reviewed half of these courses as there is simply too many so please bear with us when we say we have listed the best of what is on offer. Bangkok really is a golfing mecca and with the city to enjoy when not on the course, there just isn’t enough time in the day. Apart from golf you have great nightlife, history and culture as well as relaxation time with some cracking hotels and traditional world famous Thai massages.
Bangkok Golf Trip

Alpine Golf & Sports Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,044, Par:72
This course got the recognition that it deserved back in 2000 when Tiger Woods won the Johnnie Walker Classic. An even that the course held a gain 4 years later in 2004. This course I simply the most challenging and best laid out course in the Bangkok area and is a must pay course. See if you can follow in Tigers footsteps and remember he eagled the 555 yard par 5 7th on his way to winning the tour event.

Rachakram Golf Club & Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,941, Par:72
A very interesting course as the course has so many different holes. The designer Dr Sukitt Klangvisai has done very well to give the modern golfer a bit of variety. The course has plenty of water and even though the course is near the city it has a very links golf feel to it. All the facilities are available as you would expect from a course that was only opened in 2006 and for a young course it is maturing very well.

Bangsai Country Club

Holes: 27, Yardage: 6,725, Par:72 / 36
Set amongst the rice paddies a quaint villages of the rural Ayuttaya Province the Bangsai CC is a hidden gem of a course. Unlike most of the courses in the area, you will feel like a million miles from the city in this most beautiful of settings. Prices range quite considerably from the weekend to the weekdays and surprisingly at the weekends the course is pretty quiet.

Riverdale Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,006, Par:72
On first glance this course looks quite inviting but it does have a nasty underbelly if you’re not quite on your game. Once the one course trees grow and matures then the oks will also match the test you will get when playing. We have found that the course is more enjoyable if you play it back to front especially as on holes 7, 8 and 9 as these holes take no prisoners.

Bangkok Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,812, Par:72
Located just outside the city centre of Bangkok, this relatively young Chris Boonyarattanevet course built in the 1990’s has been host to a number of top events. The course itself has its own challenges such as narrow fairways and several water hazards dotted around making it a tough test. The club also offers night golf as well if you are looking to try something new.

Royal Gems Golf City

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,689, Par:71
This is a very interesting course and is a very interesting concept to a lot of golfing purists out there. The course itself is a replica of the best nine holes in the world for the first nine, then for the back nine the course copies Augusta’s back nine. So if you have always wanted to play Amen corner or Sawgrass’ famous 17th then this whole is a must on your next Thai golfing break.

Bangpoo Golf & Sports Club (Bangkok)

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,048, Par:72
This is a popular Thai locals and expats course due to its convenient location from the city centre and the fact that for an Arnold Palmer designed course the green fee prices are pretty reasonable. The course is not Palmers best but still a good test as the sea breezes make the course slightly harder than it is as well as keeping you cooler during your round.

The Royal Gems Golf & Sports Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,107, Par:72
Located around 45 minutes form the city centre this course I convenient to play and it is built on natural parkland. Like its name sake many believe that this is a gem of a course and it has hosted a number of prestigious events. The course over all is immaculate and is definitely a thinkers course, with narrow fairways, large bunkers and dep rough just waiting for those of line shots. This course is relatively unknown but it won’t stay that way for long.

Best Ocean Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,059, Par:72
This course is for all you golfers out there looking for a good golfing challenge. As its namesake suggests this links style course can be pretty daunting if you’re not on top of your game. Not only does the course play intimidatingly long but on a lot of the tee shots there is danger where ever you ok. The only let up you may get is the nice cool breezes that you will get coming from the ocean lets hop it’s enough to cool of your temper if things go wrong.

Pinehurst Golf & Country Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,054, Par:72
This course is closer than any other to the International airport so if you just love to play and want to get in an extra round on your arrival or departure day then this is your course. The club also has good practice facilities to so you can get all aspects of your game ready for your more competitive rounds. The mature course with an abundance of flora and fauna is a joy to the senses and on the way round you will also get a peek of the 2006 Thai prime ministers home.

Green Valley Country Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,028, Par:72
Playing here is an all-round enjoyable experience from the wonderful Trent Jones Jr course to the elegant club house. Popular with expatriates that enjoy the all-day golfing experience followed by dinner offering a good selection of European, Japanese and local Thai dishes. The course itself has a lot of water and rewards percentage shots but make sure your putting is on par as the greens are pretty fast.

Summit Windmill Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,964, Par:72
This is a very popular Nick Faldo designed course located very close to Bangkok’s city centre. As you would expect the course is in extremely good condition and is in a parkland setting with an abundance of wildlife. The course plays pretty long and can be your downfall if your stroke play is not up to par. Either way if things don’t go your way you can always reflect at the castle like clubhouse even though it is in need of some renovations.

Lotus Valley Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,015, Par:72
This is a really enjoyable Gary Player course with a good balance of holes to constantly keep you on your toes. As you would expect water comes in to play on almost every hole and with close cut fairways the course does play quite tight and can punish wayward shots. So make sure you have stocked up with balls and that you’re on the top of your game.

Sunwan Golf & Country Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,125, Par:72
The location and its surroundings makes this course what it is as it is set amongst rural villages fruit orchards and palm trees and lotus ponds; so a real Thai experience. The club has hosted two prestigious tournaments, notably the 2010 Asian Tour International and the 20011 Thailand Open. It has also won several best Asian course awards so it is thought after extremely highly. So this course is a must play when visiting the Bangkok area.

Muang Kaew Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,015, Par:72
This is a very honest course that give all that play it a fighting chance at scoring well. The greens are well guarded but the fairways give you the chance of all ways hitting the greens in regulation. The club house is a little run down but the course its self is extremely well looked after. The course plays well all year round even in the green season due to grass that is used on the course.

Thai Country Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,151, Par:72
This prestigious members course designed by Denis Griffiths is a must play when in Bangkok. The club and the level of service that you receive is second to none. The course itself is exceptionally well maintained and plays really well all year round. Events such as the Honda Classic as well as PGA events that have been won in the past by Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods. This course is well worth playing to treat yourself o any Thai golf holiday.

Navatanee Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,902, Par:72

Navatanee is an old classic and has such a rich history dating back to 1975 when the course hosted the 23rd World Cup of golf, with the US team walking away with the spoils. The Robert Trent Jones Jr designed course has also been voted as the best course in Thailand in the last 20 years. The course is always well manicured and is located in a beautiful parkland setting. This course is great addition to any Thailand golfing holiday.

Thana City Golf & Sports Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,966, Par:72
This course has had a wealth of talent grace its fairways over the years from the likes Singh, Woosnam, Tongchai Jaidee and of course the course designer himself Greg Norman. The course plays well and is designed around Bangkok’s biggest condominium developments, it is also under the main airport flight path. But don’t let that put you off as the course is a joy to play but you have to make your shots.

Nikanti Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,798, Par:72
This golf course has been praised by many due to its interesting and different course layout. Rather than having two loops of nine the course designer opted for an unusual 3 loops of 6. The course over all is pretty fair with good landing areas and wide fairway, it is the second shot to protected greens that have quite a few undulations – this is when you have to be on top of your game. The club house is modern and a great please to enjoy a meal after your round.

Vintage Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,579, Par:72
Since opening its doors in 1996 this course has had some great fed back as it is just a little bit different from other courses in the area. It is also the only course designed by the well-known architect Arthur Hills in Thailand. The course is set in natural surroundings and rolling terrain, with the fairways usually playing pretty firm so you will get some roll on your shots. The club house I a lovely English Tudor design making English golfers feel at home.

Pinehurst Golf & Country Club

Holes: 27, Yardage: 6,855, Par:72 / 36
This club is very much a mixed bag as the course and the clubhouse do not match each other. The club house is of a 3 star quality whereas on the course you drive around in Rolls Royce golf buggy. The course itself is fair and was once one of the most famous courses in Thailand. The club has also hosted the 1992 Johnnie Walker Classic and the 1994 Thailand Open.

Panya Indra Golf Club

Holes: 27, Yardage: 7,260, Par:72 / 36
Being close to the city centre makes this course popular with golfers that want to pop in and out of the city for a round. Also with 3 nines to choose from, the Garden, Palm and Lagoon course you can certainly mix up your round and avoid some of the crowds. The restaurants at the club are of a very good and we are not sure whether it is worth mentioning but the female caddies are renown to be the most beautiful in the city.

Pattaya
Pattaya is a mini golfing haven with over 20 courses to choose from. Not all of the courses are in the vicinity of Pattaya, so you will have to travel up to an hour to play. This does give you the feel of seeing more of Thailand than you may have first thought. In regards to quantity the quality does not always deliver. There ae some cracking courses that should not be missed for the golfing purists amongst us but if you are a non-serious golfer or have just picked up the game recently then Pattaya is the perfect golfing destination. As you can play without being embarrassed or feel like you’re holding anyone up or letting anyone down. Also with the famous nightlife in Pattaya this is the perfect location for group trips.
Pattaya Golf Trip

Burapha Golf Club

Holes: 36, Yardage: 6,948 / 6,828, Par:72 / 72
Offering 4 different contrasting 9’s this previous Thailand Open course is the perfect place to start your golfing holiday. The course is extremely well maintained and seamlessly fits into its beautiful countryside surroundings. You can mix and match your rounds with the East courses being more forgiving and the West course giving more of a challenge to the lower handicappers amongst you. So make sure you choose the correct courses for you.

Phoenix Gold Golf & Country Club

Holes: 27, Yardage: 6,813 / 3,261, Par:72 / 36
Consisting of 3 contrasting nines this Dennis Griffith’s designed course located a short distance from Pattaya’s main beaches is a good inclusion in to any Thai golf break. Each course has its plus points but the mountain course does offer the best views of the area. Funnily enough the Ocean course is not near the ocean but the lakes course has water coming in to play on most of the holes.

Eastern Star Country Club & Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,134, Par: 72

The is a great addition to any golf holiday in Thailand as it is a fair scoring course for both high and low handicappers alike. This Robert Trent Jones Jr course rewards the percentage shots but does favour the longer hitters amongst you. Set amongst coconut palms and only being a short distance from the sea you are embraced with cool breezes as you play.

Rayong Green Valley Country Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,096, Par:72
This Peter Thomson designed course which is located a short 40 minute drive further south is well worth adding to those to play in the area. A test for golfers of all abilities, the main draw to this course is the very picturesque nature of this mature parkland course. It is also a very nice course to walk and if you do you will get rewarded with an ice cold beer from the 3 good quality restaurants including a German themed one.

Greenwood Golf & Resort

Holes: 27, Yardage: 7,015, Par:72
Over an hour away from Pattaya this Peter Thomson parkland course is a good inclusion in to any golf holiday to Pattaya. The course is what you would expect, clean and crisp with many holes getting you to think and plot your way round. What makes the course more enjoyable is the beautiful landscaping and array of flora and fauna.

Siam Country Club – Old, Plantation & Waterside Course

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,016, Par:72
This three courses at the Siam Country club are some of the best in Thailand and between them they have hosted some extremely prestigious events. The Plantation course has hosted the 2009 US LGPA and the 2015 Thailand Open. The Old course since being revamped in 2007 has hosted several top events such as the annual Honda LPGA Classic. The Waterside even though it has yet to host a main event is another beauty. So if travelling and change is not your thing then you could simply rock up to these courses and play a different one every day.

Khao Kheow Country Club

Holes: 27, Yardage: 7,077, Par:72 / 36
This course has something for all and is a good test due to the course receiving strong sea breezes. This Peter Dye course also plays quite long as the course also has lots of elevation changes. There is a nice balance of holes and the undulating greens will reward the good and punish the impatient putter.

St. Andrews 2000 Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,777, Par:74
This is one of Thailand’s most interesting courses, not only due to the fact that the course boasts two par 6’s. But also because down to its namesake has tried to replicate the Scottish links course of St. Andrews. Designed by English architect Desmond Muirhead this course pays pretty hard and the advice is to bring a long a few extra balls for your round.

Laem Chabang International Country Club

Holes: 27, Yardage: 7,065, Par:72 / 36
This is a must play course when visiting Pattaya and this Jack Nicklaus course is considered one of Thailand’s best. Not only is the course extremely well kept but the layout of the holes of how they intertwine with the natural contours, lakes and foliage. It is well worth extending your day a little longer and playing each 3 nines; the mountain, lake or valley course. Again this course is located in between Pattaya and Bangkok so can be included in 2 different destination golfing trips.

Wangjuntr Golf & Nature Park

Holes: 36, Yardage: 7,713 / 7,641, Par:72
This is another course which is located south of Pattaya in the hills surrounding Rayong. It is well worth the journey if you are looking for a change of scenery and to play golf amongst pineapple and cassava plantations. The complex has two contrasting 18 hole layouts; the valley course and the highland course which is the longer and more challenging of the two. The area of Rayong is also a destination in itself with accommodation, restaurants and of course the Gulf of Thailand all nearby.

Pattavia Century Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,111, Par:72
This course is located roughly half way between Pattaya and Bangkok so it could be included as an additional round on your arrival or departure day. Build in 1996 and then renamed, revamped and lengthened in 2014 this Robert McFarland course plays pretty well. This course is probably one of the best value for money and is another course that you can easily walk around if you’re feeling energetic.

Phuket
Most visitors to Phuket are generally drawn in by its beautiful beaches and it being an exotic Island getaway. If travelling to the area, make sure you have enough time to unwind on the beaches and explore the Island and of course play a few rounds along the way. The island itself has 10 exceptional courses with a couple of standouts notably the Canyon courses. The Blue course shot to fame after hosting the Jonnie Walker Classic and some think the Red Mountain course to be the most spectacular in the whole of Thailand – Which is quite a bold statement taking I to account the array of stunning course in the region. If it is golf, sun and sand that you want then this is the destination for you!
Phuket Golf Trip

Blue Canyon Country Club – Canyon & Lakes Course

Holes: 36, Yardage: 7,179 / 6,789, Par:72 / 71
If in Phuket for long enough it is a must to play both of these course but if you have to select one then most will chose the Canyon Course. The reason is that this course not only hosted the 2007 Johnnie Walker classic but is also home to Tiger Woods 1998 Asian tour victory. Since then Tiger has returned to the course two more occasions again wining in 1998. The lakes course on the other hand which is also designed by Yoshikazu Kato is another great test of golf and should not be overlooked.

Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,015, Par:72
This picture postcard Jack Nicklaus designed course is a must if visiting Phuket. Feel like a pro and play some holes along the coast that overlooks the Andaman Sea. From pretty much everywhere on the course you are blessed with wonderful panoramic views of the sea and as you would expect with any of Jack’s courses that water comes in to play quite a lot. The whole golfing experience is all about service and food and drinks can be ordered out on the course, so if the round is not going too well then you know what to do!

Katathong Golf & Resort

Holes: 18, Yardage: 7,023, Par:72
Located in a valley in the province of Phang Na about an hour’s drive from Puket. This course has an interesting history as it was built on land that was left over from tin mining back in the 1900’s. The open mines and certain landscaping made the area perfect for a golf course. The course as has interesting layout and incorporates all the natural contours making it quite a challenging course to play.

Phuket Country Club

Holes: 27, Yardage: 7,150, Par:72
A fair course for fair players. Ok this is not the greatest statement to tempt you to play this course but it is fair and true. The course is actually Phuket’s oldest and most mature and well located in the middle of the beach resorts. So if you are new to golf then this would be the perfect place to start even though there are some challenging holes. The club also has a further 9 holes which are mostly reserved for its members.

Laguna Golf Phuket

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,768, Par:71
Previously known as the The Puket Golf Course but changed its name after a 2014 re-design. This course originally designed by Max Wexler now is even more challenging that it was before. The course is a wonderful test of golf and has even hosted the Thailand Open back in 2009. The course is not only perfect for golfers but the excellent restaurant and Sap facilities make it the perfect resort for all.

Phunaka Golf Course & Academy

Holes: 9, Yardage: 2,163, Par:30
If you are a serious golfer then this is a course to give a miss however if you are looking for a bit of fun to fill a couple of hours then look no further. The course is even floodlit so you can play in the evening which is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. There are lots of pars 3’s as you would expect and wayward shots are punished due to the long grass. There is also a driving range and a good restaurant to enjoy a couple of drinks before and after your round.

Loch Palm Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,555, Par:72
This is a lovely little course and extremely enjoyable to play and it has a very nice local club feel to it. Even though the course is not the longest you still have to plan your way round to make sure you walk off with a respectable score. As the name suggests there are plenty of palm trees on the course as well as a loch that features on the front nine so wayward shots will get wet.

Red Mountain Golf Club

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,905, Par:72
A must play course when visiting Phuket. This course is interesting, undulating and has a wonderful lay out that meanders its way through water features and gradients. This course is another in the area that was built on an abandoned mine and it is probably Phuket’s hilliest course. It is also a great test of golf as you have to plot your way round and make good decisions of where you are going to land your ball. So very much a risk and reward course.

Tublamu Navy Course

Holes: 18, Yardage: 6,825, Par:72
This is another course for the beginner not because it is particularly easy but because it is a public municipal golf course. So if you are new to the game and you are still learning the correct course etiquette then you will not feel completely out of place on this course. So as long as you’re not slow and hold up the locals then this is a good course to break your 18 hole virginity.
